Trail Report

The time has arrived to get in shape for the winter season. The best way to do this is get on your bike and go uphill. If one rode up the summit trail once a day till the snow flies you would be an animal ready for anything. We all know that feeling early season when the snow is awesome, but you can't muster the strength to finish the day. Not this year!!! Gopher, Gravy Train and Elks Club are terrific trails to begin your winter workout regiment. Then when your mental attitude is at it's highest, go for a Runaway Train run and shred the nar. Afterwords you can sit and enjoy the wonderful fall weather, knowing you earned it. So come on up folks, we are here for you.

Whitefish Mountain Resort has never looked better all the rain has greened the mountain up wonderfully. Come and check it out!

For the most up to date weather forecast go to our very own weather center here.

Mountain Bike Trails at Whitefish Mountain Resort

Trails - for trail descriptions of each and every trail, click here. This included trail lengths, elevation gain and loss, and basic trail info.

Chair 1 & Chair 9 is open for biking! Chair 9 gives access to Gravy Train (beginner trail) and offers an easier way out after riding cross country trails like Gopher and Wolverine.

Summit Trail - Open base to summit. The trail is riding great; beargrass is starting to bloom at lower elevations. Use caution on Summit Trail (near Chair 2) as you may encounter trail maintenance crews and/or machinery.

Runaway Train - Trail is in rough condition after all the poor weather we've had. Use caution, you will see trail crew out working on the bad spots.

Note: per our agreement with the forest service and environmental as well as wildlife impact, Runaway Train opens at 10:15a.m. and closes at 6:00p.m. NO exceptions. The WMR bike patrol thanks you for your cooperation with these regulations.

Go Fish -Upper Go Fish is open to Gravy Train. Providing access to chair #9 and all it's trails. Lower Go Fish will remain closed due to trail maintenance. Uphill traffic from base area will use summit trail. Thanks!!

Dave's Dive - Open, most of the trail has been rebuilt this summer and has many new features. Trail is still a little soft, yet rad. Go check it out.

Question Mark - Open. Grassy, rooty and technical trail from the lower summit trail.

Sidecar - Open. Fun and a nice change from the summit trail.

Elk's Club -Open. This is one of the best climbing trails at the resort.

Borealis - Open, offers access to Elk's Club and Wolverine.

Gravy Train - Open, Trail has had recent work done, so expect variable conditions. Upper trail can be raw. Gravy Train has had some recent work done and is a great transition trail for beginners and intermediates alike.

Gopher - Open, and a great Cross Country warm up trail. Wolverine and Gravy Train both cross Gopher for access. It begins at Chair One and ends at the base lodge.

Wolverine - Open. The trail is a bit soft, but riding well. Extend your fun further down the mountain next lap...but remember you will have to climb back to the lifts using Gopher.

The Shire - Multiple wooden features at the summit. Great views and a lot of fun while your buddy heads into the summit house for lunch / water / beer. New Teeter Totter feature 7/27.

Hiking Trails and Huckleberries

Danny On Hiking Trail - Open and signed to the summit. Flower Point loop is open and clear, as well as the East rim loop. Remember it is $5 to ride the lift down if you do not have a valid summer or winter pass, and no dogs are allowed on the Chair/Gondola. This is the Flathead Valley's most hiked trail for good reason! Lift rides down and incredible scenery the whole way! 3.8 miles to the summit, almost 2000' of elevation gain through open meadows, alpine flowers and beautiful NW forest.

Huckleberry Report- The Huckleberries are here, though there have been years with more. The rains and cooler temps are keeping the hucks confined to sunny areas at lower elevations. For instance, the south facing aspects around chair 2 or 3 or lower are offering the best berries as of now. They will be creeping up the mountain sides over the next few weeks. Pick 'em 'till your fingers are purple!

Zips and Slides

It is the 100 year anniversary of Glacier National Park, and the second year of Montana's newest and most fun attraction - Zip Lines and the Alpine Slide! Zip Line tours go out daily, call for a reservation at 406-862-2900. Come ride the new ¼ mile long, 300' long zip line that will knock your socks off!

Trails and Chairlifts

In addition to the zips and slides, we of course offer other great activities, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Scenic Lift Rides and the famous Walk in the Tree Tops.

Chair One is open for biking and foot traffic. Handi-Cap Accessible Gondola Rides

So stop up and see us at Patrol hut at the summit. We offer free mountain bike tours Saturday and Sundays at 1pm. We will meet you at the summit.

Observe the code listed below and share with other skiers the responsibility for a great skiing experience.
  • Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
  • People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
  • You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
  • Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
  • Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  • Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
  • Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
